Dégustation de Grands Vins du Bordelais, Club OEnophile, Les Ulis, France. Saturday, November 21, 1998. If you should ever find yourself in Les Ulis (a suburb of Paris) this is a group you should visit - in fact, I think we should establish a "sister" wine group much like the "sister cities" program.

President (and Mayor-Senator of Les Ulis) Paul Loridant, and Members of the Board of Directors, Roland and Claudine Mercier-Maitrepierre were my hosts for the evening. Les Ulis has a town vineyard ans a town wine cellar (under the municipal library) and the Club OEnophile has a section of the cellar - that is where the wines we tasted last resided. Approximately 80 members attended this tasting - a very popular event! I was presented with a club pin, a club wine glass, a bottle of wine from their vineyard/cellar and a bottle of 1990 Château Chasse-Spleen.

We first tasted two 1992 wines: a Château Lynch-Bages, Grand Cru Classé, Pauillac; and a Château La Lagune Haut-Médoc, Grand Cru Classé. Both were excellent in color but young and need more time. They were served with bread, paté and slices of smoked meat.

Next, we tasted two 1989 wines: a Château Cos Labory, Grand Cru Classé, Saint Estèphe; and a Château Leoville-Barton, Grand Cru Classé, Saint Julien. These wines were big, lush, and ready to drink and enjoy. They matched well to the main course, which was chunks of Venison marinated in red wine with a rich dark gravy, pommes de terre, and haricots verts.

With salad and cheese, we tasted two 1990 wines: a Château D'Issan, Grand Cru Classe, Margaux; and a Château Chasse-Spleen, Moulis-en-Médoc. The margaux had elements of anise, grass... the Chasse-Spleen, straw - actually I stopped taking notes at this point and just enjoyed!

However, I do remember we finished the evening with a mystery wine that turned out to be a 1989 Haut-montravel which was delightfull with the poached pears and apples.

Cheers to the Club OEnophile! They really made my stay in Paris More enjoyable.

President Elect Judy ERDMAN.
